FAQs

I have no experience in creating video game music. Will you go over the basics?

Yes, absolutely!  This program is designed for composers who want to learn more and are just getting started.  We anticipate that most of our students will have little to no experience actually writing for games.  We will guide you through it from the beginning. It will be helpful if you have experience using a DAW and/or have done acoustic composition but no actual experience in writing for games is required.

Is all of this live? Or is some of it prerecorded webinars?

This is all live — none of it is prerecorded. There will be times we watch or listen to a musical example together, but all sessions are live at the times indicated.

I’d like to get an audio interface and microphone. What do you suggest?

The Zoom H1 is a nice, compact option that can serve as a USB connected interface or a portable recorder for concerts, recording sessions, etc. That can be found here.

What DAW should I use?

Logic Pro is the software that we will be using in all teaching/demos so that is strongly preferred. A Mac computer is required for Logic Pro. You can download a free 90 day trial here. If you are running windows, we suggest you use Nuendo. Download a trial version here.

I am not quite 14 years old but I have experience in composing and would like to join. May I?

Maybe. You’ll need to discuss this with our Program Director, Dr. Taylor first. Please email us to inquire.

Will younger students be placed in age-appropriate groups?

Yes! Students will be grouped according to musical experience and background as well as by age group.

If I miss a session, can I go back and watch it later on my own time?

Yes! All the sessions are live on Zoom and are recorded. While you will miss out on the benefit of interacting live with MCA Faculty during the session, you are more than welcome to participate only through watching the recorded sessions. All recorded sessions will only be available for registered students, and for a limited time.

English is not my native language, can I still participate?

Sure! All sessions will be conducted in English and as long as you feel comfortable communicating in English, please join us!
